Language

The Anishinabe language is part of the Algonquian family. It is the widest First Nation language in the Americas. The Algonquian family includes the Innus, the Odjbway, the Atikamekw, etc. This means that even though each Nation has its own language, they can discuss and understand each other. Below are a few examples of Anishinabe words.

The creation of the world

There are many interpretations, but according to the Anishinabeg this is how the world was created: At the beginning of the world, animals were master of the world and all living in peace. Then an incident happened and animals started fighting with each other. This got the creator, Kichi Manito mad. For that reason he decided to flood the world and start a new one. Following the big flood, the world almost disappeared; there was only one group left.

That is when Wisakedjak told the animals that for the world to be revived one of them had to dive to bring back to the surface a handful of dirt to allow plants, trees and grass to grow back. The first one to try was the loon who was considered the best diver. He dove, stayed under water for one complete sun and came back out of breath, almost dead. Duck decided to try but was even less successful than loon. Then otter dove, then mink, then beaver, but none of them were able to bring back dirt. Finally, the muskrat said that he did not get easily discouraged. He said that sometimes he would have to dive many times to find his food. So he dove, hoping to save the world.

He was gone for three suns and everybody thought he was dead. Yet at the end of the third day he reappeared. He looked dead, but was still breathing and then opened an eye and smiled as he opened his paw to reveal dirt. Wisakedjak took it and put it on turtle back and that is how the new world started to become the world we know today. Floating on turtle’s back.

La langue anishinabe fait partie de la famille algonquienne. Il s’agit de la famille langagière autochtone la plus répandue dans les Amériques. Cette famille inclus entre autre les langues Innu, Odjibway, Atikamekw, etc. Cela signifie que bien que chaque Nation possède sa propre langue, leurs membres peuvent discuter et se comprendre. La création du monde

Il y a plusieurs interprétations mais, selon les Anishinabeg voici comment le monde a été créé : Au début du monde, les animaux étaient les maîtres du monde et vivaient tous en harmonie. Mais un incident se produisit et les animaux commencèrent à se battre les uns contre les autres. Ce qui eut pour effet de mettre en colère le Créateur, Kichi Manito. Il décida donc d’inonder le monde pour en faire renaître un nouveau. Suite à cette inondation, le monde est pratiquement disparu. Il ne restait qu’un seul groupe.

C’est alors que Wisakedjak annonça aux animaux que pour que le monde renaisse, l’un d’entre eux devrait ramener à la surface une poignée de terre pour que les plantes, les arbres et l’herbe puissent repousser. Le premier à essayer fut le huard qui était considéré le meilleur plongeur. Il plongea et resta sous l’eau pour un soleil complet et remonta à la surface à bout de souffle, presque mort. Le canard décida ensuite de tenter sa chance, mais il eut encore moins se succès que le huard. La loutre plongea ensuite, puis le vison, puis le castor, mais aucun d’entre eux ne pu ramener de la terre. Finalement, le rat musqué parla pour dire qu’il n’était pas aisément découragé. Il dit que parfois il devait plonger plusieurs fois pour trouver de quoi manger. Il plongea donc, espérant sauver le monde.


Il fut sous l’eau pendant trois soleils et tout le monde pensa qu’il était mort. Pourtant, à la fin de la troisième journée il réapparut. Il avait l’air mort, mais il respirait encore et il ouvrit un œil et sourit quant il ouvra sa patte pour laisser voir de la terre. Wisakedjak la prit et la mit sur le dos de la tortue et c’est ainsi que le nouveau monde pris forme, pour devenir tel que nous le connaissons aujourd’hui. Flottant sur le dos de la tortue.
